Macbeth's Netflix Queue

1. The Walking Dead - This TV show is about a group of people who are trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic United States that has been overrun by zombies. There is a lot of death and murder due to zombie attacks and clashes with other survivors in this television show. Macbeth would enjoy this because he would be able to relate to one of the main characters in the show, Rick Grimes. This character goes through a lot of changes throughout the show because he starts out as a noble police officer and slowly changes into a more corrupted person throughout the show. Rick Grimes is forced to do whatever he can to protect his family, even if that includes murder, and he also begins to suffer from hallucinations and paranoia. This is very similar to the issues that Macbeth encounters once his is king and begins murdering people due to paranoia. Rick Grimes changes throughout the story also are reflective of the changes that Macbeth undergo by going from a noble warrior to a corrupted tyrant.

2. Game of Thrones - This TV show is about many different people and families living in a fictional medieval world. This story is full of corruption, betrayal, murder and tragedy. Game of Thrones involves many people struggling to gain a position of power and doing whatever it takes to get there and retain that spot. This would be enjoyed by Macbeth because he knows what it is like to have to murder to get a position of power, and he would be able to relate to the emotional struggles that some of the characters go through when they commit terrible deeds. Many of the characters suffer in the same way the Macbeth does from not being able to "wash the blood from their hands."

3. Castaway - The movie is about a man who works for FedEx that ends up deserted on an island after his plane crashed into the ocean, which was making a FedEx shipment. He ends up befriending a volleyball and naming it Wilson, while his survives on the island by himself for years. Macbeth would enjoy this because by watching this movie he would be able to relate to the main character as he becomes insane. It could possibly help Macbeth to feel better about himself because he would be able to say, "At least I'm not as crazy as that guy talking to the volleyball."

4. Shudder Island - This movie is about a man who is investigating an island that acts as an insane asylum for many dangerous people. There are a lot of strange things going on in the island and even escaped prisoners. The main character finds many issues on the island, but he arrives onto a major problem. Who is he really investigating? This would be enjoyed by Macbeth because he would understand the issues that many of the characters are going through in the movie. Also, he would be able to relate to the main character because of his fall at the end of the movie due to a surprising twist. just like how Macbeth thought he was immune to Macduff, but then found out he was born through a c-section and that he was not actually of woman born.

  1. I like the way that you related the shows to comfort for Macbeth. He is trying to reassure himself that his situation is completely normal when in reality it is not. I also believe that Macbeth would enjoy Friday Night Lights because he can relate to the main character trying to get to a higher coaching job and he is always supported and pushed by his wife. Also one of the main characters, Smash Williams, injects steroids to gain an upper hand on the competition similar to Macbeth murdering to prove the prophecies correct. Interesting shows and thoughts.

  2. I really like the way you interpreted Macbeth's preferences. You focused more on his mental state than on his murderous deeds, unlike many others. I've never seen The Walking Dead but I was curious as to how you would relate Macbeth to a show about Zombies. However, you did a wonderful job drawing a parallel between Macbeth and Rick Grimes. Your character description of Rick really highlighted the difference in motives. Whereas Rick becomes corrupt and ruthless to protect his family, Macbeth becomes corrupt and ruthless to protect his power.

I really enjoyed this post and all the unique titles you selected! Great job (:

  3. I really liked how all your picks were films with characters that Macbeth could relate too. In particular I enjoyed your connection with Castaway. Some food for thought, if I chose to do Macbeth, I would probably pick the films, There Will Be Blood and the Social Network as they also feature lead characters who are power hungry and relentless when it comes to getting what they want. With Social Network specifically, theres this parallel between Mark's betrayal of Eduardo his best friend, and Macbeth's betrayal of Banquo. Though these films might not exactly provide comfort to Macbeth like your picks would as they would be more reflections of his life. Anyway great job.

  4. I like that you based your selection on how Macbeth's mental state would relate him to the films and tv shows you selected. I think the walking dead can also relate to Macbeth because Macbeth was a poor leader and in the walking dead Rick comes across groups of people who advertise their kindness and support but really have bad intentions and end up killing good people. Macbeth relates to these films for their insaneness under the pressures they face whether it be isolation or leadership.

  5. It's interesting how you assumed that Macbeth would watch shows that make him feel good about himself, in a very morbid manner of course, I chose the same character as you on Oder to choose my shows. You frequently mentioned how the respective shows showed the main character "falling" at some point , whether that is them succumbing to insanity, or being reducing to cold murder. I chose the walking dead as well, and we pretty much stated the same qualities, however you mentioned how Rick Grimes, became partially paranoid or insane, in which he started to see hallucinations of his wife, a very important aspect that I somehow did not mention, this is spot on!!! I mean what can make a madman like Macbeth happy other than watching another madman suffer. It's bloody brilliant; this however is countered by the fact that Rick actually gets over his insanity, and fights on, a thing that Macbeth does not realy do, eventhough he does literally fight to the end , but such was a result of his insanity. The mentioning of Game of thrones was also great as it portrays how treacherous and cruel Medival politics can be, no wonder every one in that show goes homocidal at some point, and Macbeth can realy relate to that, if the ancient King were to be resurrected his first act would probably be to create a serial killer it's-ok organization, that is dedicated to make killers happy and not regretful about there actions by showing them how other people are miserable. The mentioning of castaway totally confused me at first since it seemed random, but I guess I can see the justification. Any way Great Post, and if you ever read this supper long comment please ignore the random capitalizations, and why do so many people comment on your post?? If it hasn't been clear Great job.
